From Our Founders

Hi! This is Krysten. I co-own CMD with my bff Janine. I'm not an academic, and I struggle to put my thoughts into words most of the time, but I'm here to try.
.
Janine and I have been reflecting, looking inward, and seeing the injustice all around us for what feels like “again, for the first time”. We’ve known it was there, we’ve been aware of it, but we didn’t really “see”. Due to our white privilege we were able to unconsciously avoid it as part of our our white narrative. Anti-black racism and racism of all kinds is wrong and always has been wrong. Do we need to scream it out loud? Yes, we do.
.
We are committed to being better representatives of Toronto and Canada’s diverse makers. We didn’t realize that we weren’t living up to our Local Love ethos as fiercely as intended by checking ourselves on Black and Indigenous diversity in our cast of local designers and makers. This has been eye opening.
.
We will continue to raise funds and donate to local and Canadian non profits serving Black and Indigenous communities - presently proceeds from all masks sold are being donated to the below listed non-profit organizations whose missions are to serve Black and Indigenous communities in Toronto, Ontario wide, and Canada wide. We are writing letters and will make calls. We will consciously move forward in our business to uplift and support more BIPOC makers and artists. We will do the work to find them, however, if you are a maker in the Black and Indigenous communities and want to show us your work, please send us a message.
.
We are listening and we are learning about our voice and vow to do better. We hear it, that our friends, family, and neighbours in the black community have been fighting this battle for real change for a very, very long time. We want to fight it with you, we stand with you. Racism IS a white people problem created by European colonizers, and white people need to be fighting for change.
.
Vote to de-fund the police NOT education and social services. Vote for change. Vote for representatives that will push positive change forward and put an end to the hundreds of years of oppression the Black and Indigenous communities have suffered. We will be.
